Fears of North East bearded dragon epidemic

A BEARDED dragon epidemic has exploded in the North with experts fearing the reptiles are being bred to meet demand and kept in poor conditions.

Concern is spreading that the creatures – used to living in arid deserts like the Australian outback – are subject to animal cruelty.

The 2ft-long reptile has been branded “the new Staffordshire bull terrier” as pet shop owners say its popularity has spiked among young men.

Male bearded dragons will fight to the death and vets and pet shop owners are reporting widespread neglect. Some owners are posting dragon fights on the YouTube video sharing website.

Mandy Graham, owner of Marvellous Monsters pet shop in Blaydon, Gateshead, said: “We are finding people are breeding them privately but each time you get a clutch of 30 eggs, and bearded dragons can breed four or five times a year.

“People are paying around £5 or £10 for a baby. It seems when owners buy them they’re small and cute – but they grow to be 2ft long.”
