Don't fear the dragon in 2012

Following the lunar calendar, the New Year celebration is actually called the spring festival and lasts about two weeks, says Jia-Yan Mi, associate professor of English, world languages and cultures at the College of New Jersey . It's customary to eat sticky rice dumplings, recite poetry, gift red packets of money to children, clothe yourself in the same hue, and cap everything off with a lantern festival . All to usher in the dragon, that great symbol of good.
It's also the only Chinese astrological sign that can't be found in reality. The parade of rooster, rat, ox, rabbit, snake, horse and pig can all be feasibly found on a single farm (well, maybe not the tiger ... unless it's gunning for the livestock). The dragon, however, is seen as a composite super animal, its features drawn from others: the talons of an eagle, the skin of a snake.
Yet 2012 is not simply the year of the dragon. It's actually the year of the water dragon. In Chinese astrology, each animal symbol is paired with one of five elements: fire, water, wood, earth or metal/gold, says Mi. (His daughter is a gold dragon and his son an earth dragon.)
