It seems that everywhere you turn people are talking about how you have to attend a university to develop a successful career, but some people just aren’t suited for a university. Others prefer to learn through a hands on approach or may be more interested in occupations that don’t require a degree. Thankfully, there are plenty of options when it comes to job training outside of the university.
Underemployed
If you have previously been employed, you may qualify for help through some of the job training grants offered by Employment and Social Development Canada. These grants are meant to help people develop job skills after they have met with job loss. Though specific requirements have to be met, this may be the perfect way to develop new job skills or expand on existing ones.
Red Seal
Red Seal funds are put aside for those who have skills without certification. It may be that you have worked in a trade for years, but you have no certifications in your field. This is common for people who went straight to work without obtaining educational standing. The Red Seal program allows you to put your existing knowledge to use. You can take a test to obtain certification in your field even if you don’t have a formal education to back it up. This allows for more opportunities at a higher level than you previously had access to.
Training Options
Aside from the programs list above, there are other ways you might receive training in a field that doesn’t require a degree from a university.
Apprenticeship Programs: An apprenticeship program offers hands-on training sometimes combined with classroom training. An agreement to serve relieves you of financial obligations for the classroom training and the hands on experience provides a chance to work while you learn a trade. At the end of the program you will receive a journeyman’s license that signifies expertise in your field.
Truck Driver Training: Like the apprenticeship programs, truck driver training provided by companies like Gennaro Transport Training allows you to experience hands on training while you work. You will learn all of the elements involved in driving a truck and will test for your own license at the end of the program. Again, an agreement to serve is given in return for the training instead of having to pay cash for it.
Without the proper training, you may find that you have very little chance for anything more than limited success in your field. Management opportunities are often reserved for those who have a degree or some type of certification rather than experience alone. Increase your chances of success by taking advantage of some of the training opportunities available to you.
