Balderson introduces exotic animal bill

COLUMBUS -- Nancy Nighswander has no intention of letting the government take her five primates and one leopard.

"I will hide them and do whatever I have to do to protect them," said Nighswander, of Tiffin, after watching State Sen. Troy Balderson introduce an exotic animal bill to the Ohio Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee in Columbus on Wednesday morning. "This bill could turn me into a criminal."

If the bill passes as written, an immediate ban will be put on private individuals acquiring any exotic animals and will force those already owning exotic animals to comply with strict regulations by Jan. 1, 2014.

"I legally acquired each and every one of my pets," Nighswander said. "How can the government now suddenly decide that we can't own them and try to stop us from keeping them?"

Balderson has been working on the bill since 2011 after Gov. John Kasich called for a task force to make recommendations for such a bill after Zanesville resident Terry Thompson released 56 of his exotic animals, including lions, tigers, bears, wolves and monkeys, before killing himself in October.
