Knox County couple accused of keeping exotic animals may keep clean record

A Knox County couple accused of keeping a slew of illegal exotic animals at their home will avoid a jail term if they abide by terms of an agreement approved by a judge.
William Anthony Smith, 52, and his wife, Kimberly Elaine Smith, 49, arrested Dec. 19 on various animal-related misdemeanor charges, also walked away with a chance at erasing their records.
Court records show William Anthony Smith pleaded guilty Feb. 10 to two counts of violation of the exotic animals law and was placed on judicial diversion for two years, according to Assistant Public Defender Julia Gautreau.
Under an agreement approved by General Sessions Judge Patricia Long, William Smith has a chance to have the charge expunged if he stays out of trouble during that probationary period. Other conditions of the agreement include that he cannot have any animals during that time and is subject to random inspections by the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency at their home.
Under another agreement approved by the judge, the state agreed to suspend prosecution of an animal cruelty charge against Smith's wife for the next year, said her attorney, Mitchell Harper.
