TEMECULA: Animal assembly captivates students
19.05.12
Snakes, lizards, tarantulas and giant cockroaches captured the
imaginations of students at E. Hale Curran Elementary
School in Murrieta when they visited the campus recently.
Animal handler Sandee Gee of Dana Point, owner of Full Spectrum Educational Services ,
brought an array of unusual critters to school to share with
students at assemblies held throughout the day on Feb. 10. Gee
spoke about each animal's habitat, where it is from and what it
likes to eat.
And, best of all, the students had the opportunity to touch many
of the animals, including a turtle, a tortoise and a nine-foot-long
albino Burmese python.
"She's really big. You can all pet her at the same time," Gee
told a group of kindergartners and first-graders who lined up to
touch the huge, yellow-colored python named Goldilocks. Several
students stood in a line and joined together to hold up the heavy
python for photos while also touching it gently.
Other students were a little shy about touching some of the
animals. As Gee's assistant, Jan Rumble, walked around the room
showing the students a smaller ball snake (named for the way it
curls up in a ball as a defense mechanism), first-grader Roby
Hughes blurted out, "I do not want to touch that."
