What are the main differences between early reptiles / amphibians and dinosaurs?
Could it be argued that reptiles and birds are simply the products of dinosaurs that did not die out? What physical characteristics separate dinosaurs from reptiles? (other than extinction).

No, living reptiles and birds are not products of dinosaurs that did not die out. First of all, the turtles are anapsids. They are not closely related to dinosaurs or even to lizards. Turtles have no skull opening, just like the most primitive reptiles
