When Darwin landed here on the HMS Beagle in 1835, he began to observe the fine evolutionary changes in birds as well as tortoises on the various islands as a result of adaptation to their environment. He found as many as 15 species of finch and several of tortoises that led him to evolve his path-breaking theory. Face-to-face with a leaf-chewing tortoise on North Seymour Island, I asked: "Hey, what was it like to have Darwin peering into your carapace?" In reply, the sesquicentenarian simply gazed into the distance.
Today, February 12, is celebrated worldwide as Darwin Day, as the day of reason and science. To commemorate all that Charles Darwin - author of the Origin of the Species paper that spelt out "the theory of evolution by natural selection" - really epitomised, would mean venturing beyond this.
